PROFILE OF MGM INSTITUTE OF HEALTH SCIENCES (MGMIHS), NAVI MUMBAI

The Mahatma Gandhi Mission (MGM) Trust is the parent body of MGMIHS which was established in 1982 by Hon. Shri. Kamalkishor N. Kadam with a futuristic vision to provide qualitative education by applying innovative and dynamic pedagogical techniques, promote health, prevent and cure diseases, advancing biomedical and clinical research and educational programs for tomorrow's physicians and scientists. Since inception, the Trust has focused on providing Health Care Services, School/Higher Education and Professional Education with dedication and commitment.

The MGM Trust was established in Nanded (Maharashtra) and in due course of time it extended its services to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (Aurangabad), Navi Mumbai, Parbhani (Maharashtra) and Noida Uttar Pradesh. A chain of Schools, Medical, Nursing, Management, Engineering, Architecture, Law, Computer Science & IT, Bioinformatics and Biotechnology, Fine Arts and Journalism stand testimony to the endeavors of the Trust. These Institutions under MGM Trust have achieved a mark of excellence in their respective areas over last 40 years.

Founders of Trust are a group of highly dedicated and socially committed Engineers, Doctors and Scientists. Institutions under trusts are run with the able guidance of Shri. Kamalkishor Kadam, M. Tech. (IIT-Mumbai), Chairman of the Trust and Former Minister of Education, Maharashtra and the trustees Shri. A. N. Kadam (B.E.), Dr. P. M. Jadhav (FRCS, U.K.), Dr. S. N. Kadam (FRCP, Edin.), Late Shri. P. S. Borade (M.E.), Dr. N. N. Kadam (MD, DCH) and Shri. U. N. Kadam (B.E). The MGM Trust is inspired by the life and thoughts of Mahatma Gandhi and it strives hard to achieve excellence in all academic fields including research for advancement of knowledge. It lays lot of stress in building sound character in accordance with Mahatma Gandhi's teaching that 'Literary education is of no value if it is not able to build sound character".

Ever since its establishment, the Trust has grown by leaps and bounds, solely due to efficient governance, commitment to quality education and dedication towards social causes. Two prominent universities under the Trust are testimony: MGM Institute of Health Sciences [MGMIHS - Deemed to be University with two campuses at Navi Mumbai & Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar(Aurangabad)] and MGM University [State Private University at Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar(Aurangabad)].

The MGM Trust started two medical colleges, MGM Medical College & Hospital at Kamothe, (Navi Mumbai) during 1989, and MGM Medical College & Hospital at Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar(Aurangabad) during 1990 with an intake of 100 MBBS seats in both colleges. During the year 2006, University Grants Commission (UGC) approved establishing of MGM Institute of Health Sciences (MGMIHS) as a Deemed to be University u/s 3 of UGC Act, 1956 with these two colleges as constituent medical colleges at Navi Mumbai and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar(Aurangabad), vide Notification No. F. 9-21/2005-U.3 (A) dated 30.08.2006 issued by the Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Higher Education, New Delhi. Kamothe (Navi Mumbai) is the Head Quarters of the Deemed to be University. MGMIHS started a full spectrum of health science programs considering health needs of society requiring trained and skilled allied health professionals over last 17 years.

MGMIHS has been accredited as grade 'A++' with CGPA 3.55 by NAAC in its 2nd cycle accreditation in 2022. MGMIHS has been accorded "Category I" status by UGC in the graded autonomy. MGMIHS has also been awarded "12 B" status by UGC making it eligible to receive government grants for students and faculties. MGMIHS has been ranked amongst top 200 Universities of India (Rank band of 151-200) in NIRF 2023. Both medical college hospitals at Navi Mumbai and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar(Aurangabad) are NABH accredited. All the diagnostic laboratories at both campuses are NABL accredited. MGM New Bombay Hospital, Vashi has received the coveted Joint Commission International (JCI) Accreditation. We stand as one of only 33 such esteemed institutions. MGMIHS has initiated its efforts towards international ranking by participating in QS-I-gauge rating in 2023. MGMIHS has a SIRO recognition by the DSIR DST, Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt of India. MGMIHS Institution's Innovation Council (IIC) has achieved '3 STARS' rating in the non-technical "University" category in 2023.

All these institutions strive to achieve excellence not only in academics and research but also in community service by way of dedicated patient care & outreach programs. With various national and international collaborations, MGMIHS has been successful in sharing knowledge and skills across the world. To add to this, our strong alumnus base of more than 15000 professionals across the world is adding to the cause of healing.

MGMIHS is having teaching hospitals at Navi Mumbai (Kamothe & Vashi) and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar(Aurangabad) with a total capacity of around 2500 beds. Medical services are extended to needy patients and those below poverty line through Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana of State Government & Pradhanmantri Jan Aarogya Yojna (PMJAY) of Central Government. The trauma and emergency (Critical Care) facility at MGM Hospital, Kamothe is the most used and lifesaving facility for Mumbai- Pune and Mumbai -Goa Highway mass casualties.

MGMIHS is committed to the control of Tuberculosis in Raigad District and Navi Mumbai by vigorously implementing RNTCP Guidelines. MGM Medical College and Hospital, Navi Mumbai is the designated DOTS-Plus Centre and District DR (Drug Resistant) TB Centre for patients in Raigad district. MGMIHS has been awarded silver plaque by Joint Director of Health Services (TB), State Tuberculosis Development Corporation for "pursuit of excellence in medical education and contribution in the field of National Tuberculosis Program".

MGM Medical College & Hospital, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar(Aurangabad) is the first centre in Marathwada and Khandesh to provide liver transplant services, and the only regional centre providing all major organ transplant services (kidney, liver, bone marrow and cornea). We feel very proud to say that more than 120 kidney transplants have been performed (including 11 cadaver kidneys). Maharashtra Government has approved Zonal Transplant Coordination Center (ZTCC) for Marathwada, with Secretariat Office at the Institute.

In 2009 MGMIHS started Ph.D. in Medical and Allied Health Sciences (Pre and Para Medical Courses, Nursing and Physiotherapy). The University accords high priority to support research. Established well equipped centralised research facilities accessible to all researchers. Excellence in research is considered a prerequisite to attaining excellence both in teaching as well as patient care. More than 100 Researchers/Clinicians/Scientists are pursuing Ph.D. in various disciplines. More than 100 Research Scholars have already been conferred Ph.D. Degrees. All the dissertations of the PhD degree holders are uploaded on Shodhganga portal of inflibnet.

School of Biomedical Sciences of the University offers B.Sc. courses in Paramedical Sciences and M.Sc. in allied health sciences including Biotechnology, Genetics, Molecular Biology and Clinical Embryology. Paramedical B.Sc. Courses have been started to improve the quality and services towards health needs of the people and to increase the quantum and quality of human resources for allied health services.

MGM School of Physiotherapy, Navi Mumbai established in the year 2008 has developed linkages with University of Sydney, Australia and the Cardiff University, UK to jointly pursue research and human resource development.

MGMIHS established MGM Institute's University Department of Prosthetics & Orthotics, Navi Mumbai in 2016 with approval from Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) to take care of the needs of differently-abled (Divyangjan). This institute offers Bachelor of Prosthetics & Orthotics programme (4 and a half years). MGMIHS is the 1st deemed to be University across India to start such a programme.

Due recognition has been given to the exemplary social work conducted by MGMIHS students by allotting NSS unit of 500 students to MGMIHS by Higher and Technical Education Department, Maharashtra Government (300 students at Navi Mumbai campus and 200 students at Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar(Aurangabad) campus). Under University Social Responsibility, total 10 villages are adopted under Unnat Bharat Abhiyaan (UBA) as follows:

  • At Navi Mumbai Campus (Dhodani, Dehrang, Dhamni, Waghachiwadi, Tawarwadi)
  • At MGM Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar(Aurangabad) (Sindon, Bhindon, Sahastramuli, ShivgadTanda, PardariTanda)

MGMIHS Bioethics Unit has been established with Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, Dr. Shashank D. Dalvi as Unit Head and one Professor as coordinators each for Navi Mumbai & Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar(Aurangabad) campuses.

MGMIHS has thrust area of research on Tuberculosis, Diabetes, Osteoporosis: Osteoporosis -Zebra fish - Vertebrate Model Developed for Nano Toxicology Drugs Screening, Mental health & Yoga, Physiotherapy, Biomechanics, Radiation effect on fetus new born and children and Covid-19 etc. MGMIHS encourages and extends best possible infrastructure, facilities and supports for intensifying research and innovation. MGMIHS provides financial support to Master students, PhD scholars and faculty members for research, filing patents and copyrights, organizing conferences/workshops/CME, attending national or international conference etc. To bring about a competitive spirit in research, prizes are awarded to best scientific paper and incentive has been provided to Faculty/students for publishing scientific papers, books, chapters every year as per research promotion policy of MGMIHS.

MGMIHS has also stepped into Innovation & Entrepreneurship with clear and well-defined research thrust areas by establishing an Incubation & Innovation Centre. MGMIHS is also a member of MHRD's Institutional Innovation Council (IIC). In past 3 years MGMIHS has received 29 extramural research grants to amount of Rs 4.83 Cr. from various funding agencies Govt. of India as a financial support of Research & Development. The extensive research of MGMIHS was translated to more than 3800 publications consisting 6839 Scopus indexed citations with h index of 36. In past 3 years (2021-2023) 917 research papers were published in peer revived national and international journals. MGMIHS disseminates the information and knowledge of current edge research of health and allied science by publishing quarterly peer reviewed scientific journal "MGM journal of Medical Sciences" by Medknows (Wolters Kluwer) indexed in DOAJ, NCL and UGC Care list. Outstanding and novel finding of the research were subjected to IPR. MGMIHS has filed 15 patents and out of them 9 patents were published and 4 were granted. MGMIHS has filed 132 copy rights and 25 copyrights were submitted in the year 2023.

Recognition of MGM Medical College, Navi Mumbai & Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar(Aurangabad) as a Recognized Social Entrepreneurship, Swachhta & Rural Engagement Cell (SES REC) Institution from Mahatma Gandhi National Council of Rural Education, Department of Higher Education (DHE), Government of India.

Apart from Academics, Research & Clinical work, commitment towards Mother Nature is visible at both campuses of the University. MGM Medical College, Navi Mumbai received 1st rank in National Institutional Swachhta Ranking 2019 in the non-residential college category competition organized by Government of India. MGM Medical College, Navi Mumbai received the award "Association of Healthcare Providers (India) (AHPI) 2019" for excellence in Community engagement. India Today ranked MGM Medical College & Hospital, A'bad at 37 among all Medical Colleges of India & College Ranked among Top 5 Colleges with Best Male to Female Ratio. MGM New Bombay College of Nursing was ranked 6th by Higher Education Review Magazine.

With more than 5000 currently enrolled students & 500 faculties, MGMIHS looks forward to always remain in line with UGC quality mandate and NEP 2020.
